Simple transistor driven flyback transformer

Simple flyback transofmrer driver.

Yesterday I got my hands on an old CRT monitor and decided to build myself a flyback driver for the flyback transformer that I extracted from the CRT after a few minutes of frenzy. After a few minutes spent on google I found a good enough schematic for a transistor driven flyback driver.

Schematic above is stolen from Greg Miller (http://www.angelfire.com/80s/sixmhz/flyback.html).

The only thing that I did not have at home to get this thing going was a transistor that could survive being part of this project so I ended up getting a few "MJE13009", one the first one I used a way too small heasink and it left us at a very early stage, the second one I slapped on to the biggest heatsink I could find and it is still alive, so lesson learned. When in doubt, use the biggest heatsink.

A short movie of the driver and flyback transformer in action can be downloaded here.
